Who We Are

Let’s Get It Basketball is a non-profit basketball training academy dedicated to players who are motivated to listen, learn, and grow. We offer high-level basketball skills training in a low-stress environment at an accessible cost. We are an outreach ministry under Living Hope Baptist Church, serving the Lakeshore community.

We want our players to

Make mistakes. We encourage players to make mistakes and want them to recognize that failure is the most important tool needed to improve at anything in life. The only way to learn and understand what is good is to recognize and admit what isn't.

Be better. We challenge players to be a better friends and sons/daughters. We encourage players to challenge mediocrity both on and off the court. We want athletes to feel confident performing learned basketball techniques with a high level of skill and proficiency.

Be good examples. Our trainers are not only Certified Fitness Consultants and educated kinesiologists, they are mentors who recognize the need for respectable role models in basketball culture. We want to build impactful relationships with our players through mentorship and training.

Be productive. Our sessions consist of challenging, productive drills that are practical for in-game play. With every exercise and activity, our trainers aim to equip players with the tools they need to succeed.

Know the truth. We talk about examples of humility, honesty, discipline, leadership, accountability, perseverance, patience and self-control, while sharing the truth about who the God of the Bible is. We believe that the gospel ultimately provides true, lasting transformation.

Our Reason "Why"

And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. - Romans 5:2b-5 New International Version

When faced with adversity, the common response is to quit or find an easier solution. At LGI, we encourage youth to view their struggles as opportunities to learn, grow and celebrate. That is why we believe Romans 5:3-5 best reflects what our program aims to do with each training session.

We want to create a learning environment that promotes our youth’s basketball skill development and personal growth. In fact, we encourage mistakes and our program is designed to challenges players’ egos and produce struggles. We avoid drills that are unproductive and encourage complacency. We encourage youth to step out of their comfort zones with growth as the goal. We create experiences that help players persevere, learn humility and improve their skill with the tools and support we provide.

More importantly, we focus on helping youth understand more about Jesus Christ and what He has done for us. Along with our training, we aim to lead youth to hope during our group discussions. This hope comes from knowing that God loves us so much that he died for us, and wants to change us and be our ultimate source of confidence, dependence, strength and growth. We want to teach our players to pursue everything they do knowing that God uses every struggle and experience to build perseverance, character and, ultimately, hope in Jesus.

We are more than your average basketball program. We strive to equip athletes with what they need to succeed both on and off the court. We believe that there is more to life than just basketball. However, we use our passion for the game to teach youth how to make mistakes successfully, follow good examples through mentorship, be productive with every challenge, and know the truth about who God is and who they are. We want our players to no longer doubt themselves, but to trust their individual developmental process with hope in God’s plan for their lives.

Meet Our Trainers

Gil Garrovillo, Co-Founder and Head Trainer

Gil recently completed a Specialized Honours Bachelor of Arts Degree in Kinesiology/Health Science from York University and is a Certified Personal Trainer under The Health and Fitness Federation of Canada. He also underwent training with Bill Pangos and The Coaching Association of Canada. Gil has trained athletes at various levels (development and professional/NBL Canada). He currently coaches and trains CKaTT’s U11 and U16 basketball teams for OBA, CYBL, and the Nike Signature League. With his high energy and intensity, Gil looks forward to sharing his understanding of human movement to enhance players’ performance in unorthodox ways. He is passionate about mentoring youth and demonstrating God’s love through action. What makes LGI stand out is the family environment we aim to create and our trainers’ robust educational backgrounds. We analyze athletic performance with intricacy, ensuring fluid movements in realistic in-game scenarios that we hope will increase athletes’ IQ on the court.

Sohan Vémannagari, Assistant Trainer

Sohan recently joined LGI as one of our newest trainers. He is completing two degrees at York University, a Bachelor of Science Degree in Kinesiology/Health Science and a Bachelor of Education. He is also a Certified Personal Trainer. He was an assistant coach for the Fletchers Meadow S.S. Junior Boys Basketball Team and a Varsity Rower for York University for three seasons. Sohan looks forward to applying his knowledge of biomechanics, human kinetics, and mindfulness to the game of basketball. What makes LGI Basketball different from other programs is our focus on the intangible aspects of the game. LGI prides itself on the development of transferable life-skills that build character in players on and off the court.

Charles (Mikee) Victor, Assistant Trainer

Charles has been playing basketball since he could walk. He currently works as a Member Experience Specialist at Life Time Athletic and has a Diploma in Fitness/Health Promotion from Humber College. Basketball became a way to push himself beyond his capabilities, remind himself of our limitations as humans, and that we can look to God for strength, peace and purpose. When Charles feels defeated and lost, shooting around and dribbling helps him talk to God through prayer. As a big fan of Derrick Rose, Irving and the G.O.A.T.s, Charles is reminded that God is number one. He hopes to share the goodness and the joy God gives him with the younger generation. LGI is unique because we teach youth who our true idol should be: Jesus Christ. As we dig into the bible, we learn about our purpose in life. He is excited to see everyone at this summer’s academy.
